I began experimenting with natural dyes 3 years ago year after my realization that the fast fashion industry was using chemicals and processes that are extremely harmful to garment workers, the environment and consumers.
As I thought about where I would source materials for my natural dyeing, I recalled how much waste there was from running my own bakery. While we as a company made a point to compost, I was aware that often this isn't the case for many food establishments. So, I partnered with some local restaurants and began picking up their onion and avocado scraps and experimented with these to begin.
I've found this process especially rewarding not only because I feel more connected to what I'm making, but knowing that I'm giving food waste another life, rather than it going straight to the landfill feels more meaningful. I am continually surprised and inspired by the colors that nature produces and will continue exploring with different dyes.
