Dread to Dreams Zine for MA Sustainable Design
Dread to Dreams is a zine I created and self-published as part of my final major project for my Master’s in Sustainable Design from Kingston School of Art. On this MA I took a deep dive into our current fashion system. I analyzed consumer behavior and interest in another system and researched and considered the possibility of more local and soil-to-soil clothing systems. I also researched and compiled case studies relating to: the farming and processing of clothing materials, the current materials in use and their impact on humans and the environment, human relationship to clothing and nature, current methods of analyzing sustainability in clothing brands, and more.
Dread to Dreams is an independent zine publication and social media platform that aims to present not only the issues we currently face in our fashion system — the dreads — but also the visions — the dreams — for how this system and way of wearing clothes could be better. It covers a range of topics from the farming of our clothing materials to our consumption behavior. The hope of the zine is to inspire people to think, dream, and then do. Based on the idea that there’s no one voice or one solution that will make it all better, it encourages all voices to be heard and even small actions to be celebrated, because to make real change we need all of us and many ideas.
